Steel Jewelry Care Guide

Steel jewelry is renowned for its durability, strength, and sleek appearance. Whether you’re wearing stainless steel rings, bracelets, necklaces, or earrings, proper care will help preserve their finish and appearance for years to come. Here’s a comprehensive guide to keeping your steel jewelry in excellent condition.

1. Clean Regularly

To keep steel jewelry looking its best, clean it regularly with warm water and mild soap or dish detergent. Use a soft cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently remove dirt, oils, and residue.

Avoid abrasive cleaners, rough brushes, or scouring materials, as these can scratch the surface. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth.

2. Avoid Harsh Chemicals

Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion and tarnishing, but prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals can still damage or discolor its surface.

Keep your jewelry away from bleach, chlorine, strong cleaning agents, and other harsh chemicals. Apply perfumes, lotions, sunscreen, and hair products before putting on your jewelry and allow them to dry first whenever possible.

Extra care should be taken with plated or coated steel jewelry, as chemicals and abrasion can gradually wear down the outer finish.

3. Be Cautious Around Pools and Seawater

Although stainless steel handles water well, we recommend removing your jewelry before swimming whenever possible.

Chlorinated pool water and prolonged exposure to saltwater can affect the surface over time, particularly around small crevices, clasps, joints, and other areas where residue can collect. Seawater can also leave salt and mineral deposits on the jewelry after it dries.

If your steel jewelry is exposed to the ocean, a swimming pool, or other salt or chemically treated water, rinse it thoroughly with fresh water as soon as possible and dry it completely with a soft cloth.

For gold-plated, black-finished, or otherwise coated steel jewelry, avoiding swimming and prolonged water exposure is especially recommended to help preserve the finish.

4. Store Properly

Store your steel jewelry in a cool, dry place away from excessive humidity. Ideally, keep individual pieces in separate compartments or soft pouches to reduce scratching, tangling, and contact with other jewelry.

Make sure jewelry is clean and completely dry before storing it for extended periods.

5. Handle with Care

While steel jewelry is durable, it is not immune to scratches, dents, or other physical damage. Avoid wearing jewelry during heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, manual work, or activities where it may be struck or caught on another object.

Take particular care with clasps, chains, stones, decorative elements, and moving components, which may be more vulnerable than the steel itself.

6. Polish Occasionally

For plain polished stainless steel, a soft jewelry polishing cloth can help remove fingerprints and restore shine.

Avoid aggressive polishing compounds unless they are specifically suitable for your jewelry. Plated, antiqued, blackened, or otherwise specially finished pieces should not be aggressively polished, as doing so may wear away or alter the finish.

7. Inspect Regularly

Periodically inspect your jewelry for signs of wear or damage. Check clasps, connecting rings, settings, chains, and other moving or joined components for looseness, bending, or excessive wear.

Addressing small issues early can help prevent further damage or loss of the jewelry.
